Every memory of everything we have done in our lives is stored as energy in every cell of our bodies. This energy can cause us problems unless it is released because it is linked to all of our experiences, the good as well as the bad. Memories such as sexual abuse, auto accidents, or any other memory based energy can affect us in how we act or react to things. Unwinding is a way of releasing this energy.
John Barnes discovered that our bodies need to release energies to be able to let go of past issues. If you were to watch a dog as it gets up or lies down, you will see that it does not simply get up or lay down. It goes through a lot of movement. When a dog gets up, it usually shakes itself. When it lies down, it will move in circles several times. This is a form of releasing energy.
Because we are humans, and slightly more complex mentally, we tend not to do things like this. It also means that being more complex, we don’t do all the natural things to help ourselves. That is why unwinding was developed.
In the classes that Brian took several years ago, he saw all the ways that someone can unwind, and what it does to help someone. Sometimes the person unwinding will say something or scream or laugh. There was one class where students were doing unwinding and someone shouted “You bastard. You won’t ever touch me again.” First, this was not directed at the therapist that was working on that person. It was directed at someone in this person’s past. By uttering the phrase, they were releasing energy, energy that was keeping them stuck in one pattern, in one place. This release was a big key in allowing them to move on from their past.
One person almost drowned years before, but as she unwound, she would go through the same positions as she did when she was drowning. Another was reliving the birth of her second child (not all releases are of bad memories). When Brian was unwinding, he was literally upside down four times. This was because his body wanted to go there, and the therapist working with him was intuitive enough to help make that happen.
Some of Caring Palms’ clients have had releases from car accidents, emotional issues, stress, and other things. In each case, the client felt better after the process.
Basically, the process involves the client allowing their body to go into the positions where it wants to go while a therapist watches over them, keeps them safe, and helps them through the process. Your body knows what it needs to release. The issue is allowing it to get where it needs to be to release it. Sometimes these positions are very much like the positions that one was put through in the actual experience that their body is trying to release. (Remember, you are not the one deciding what to release. You are simply following your body and allowing it to do what it needs to do.)
For the process, the client is asked to wear as little as possible. In the actual classes, students were asked to undress to their underwear or wear swimsuits. The same is true for sessions if possible. The reason for this is that the therapist needs to keep contact with the client throughout the session, and it works better if that contact is skin on skin. The usual contact points are the chest, abdomen, back, and head. Sometimes the therapist will do a rocking motion to help facilitate the unwinding. As their intuition directs, they will lift a leg or an arm because sometimes when you take gravity out of the situation, it helps the client continue on this journey that they are on. Sometimes the therapist will lightly nudge the client if they feel the client wants to go that way (remember, part of the therapist's job is to be intuitive enough to tune into the client's needs).
Some unwindings start on the table, the client having some other type of session (MFR, massage, Reiki). Some start in a standing position, and eventually end up on the floor. The therapist is there to help ease the person to the position they need to be in. The client has control the entire time. If they feel they need to drop to the floor, they may as long as they feel the therapist is there to help them down gently. If the therapist is not in the right position, then it is up to the client to wait until they are there.
Unwinding requires that the client have a lot of trust in the therapist. The therapist is there to help, to facilitate and keep the unwinding moving, and to make sure that the client is safe at all times (not bumping into walls and such).
Now, a lot has been written here that could scare anyone. Keep in mind that this is a safe and prudent form or therapy. The client is not in any trance. If the memory of what they are going through or the positions are too much for them, all they need to do is stop. Yes, it is that simple.
Unwinding may be awkward the first time as one usually does not know what to do. Once it is understood what to do, it is simply a matter of letting it happen and following it. There are even ways to let the therapist know if one feels they need an arm or a leg pulled to get the feeling they need. One can even tell the therapist "Press here" if pressure is needed on some specific place. (As has been the case with people releasing from auto accidents, they seem to want pressure on the sternum as that is where the seatbelt pressed on them.)
Many people who have been through auto accidents tend to hold in that energy, and their bodies are screaming for it to be released (this stored energy can cause tension, pain, uneasiness). When done, a person usually feels lighter, relieved of tension that may have been caused by bad experiences or other energies. They feel stronger and able to move on. This is the purpose of unwinding.
